The HBNA Beautification Committee welcomes your interest and participation in maintaining and improving our common green space!

The primary role of beautification is oversight of our landscape maintenance company. HBNA contracts out the basic routine maintenance of our common green space, including lawn care and mowing, trimming and pruning of shrubs and trees, blowing off leaves in the fall, and litter pick-up. The maintenance crew comes once every one to two weeks, depending on the season.

In addition, the committee has a small “discretionary” budget for additional maintenance and improvements. Projects such as removing and replacing diseased trees, planting additional shrubs, perennials, and bulbs, and putting out additional mulch are examples of discretionary projects.

HBNA Beautification Committee is also interested in developing and improving two parks on our Brookhaven borders. We will be working with other community partners as well as local governments to try and make these areas a more usable and enjoyable to our neighborhood. NEW! Park Seven - Club and Davidson Triangle

If you’ve driven or walked by the triangle at the intersection of Club and Davidson, you may have noticed some improvements in the works. The city recently removed an old oak tree from one of the corners. But that’s just the beginning. Redevelopment of this “micro park” is the first of many planned improvements to the public green spaces in our neighborhood. These efforts are being spearheaded by the recently formed Historic Brookhaven Preservation Society. So … how did it all begin and what is the plan?

Believe it or not, it all started over two years ago, when a young girl drove through the Club/Davidson triangle while trying to avoid a giant cockroach in her car. Fortunately, she was fine and the net result was a 2,000.00 insurance payment to the HBNA for repairs to the landscape. This incident inspired several neighbors to get together and discuss the current condition of the space which has obviously aged … and not too well. There were overgrown shrubs that are creating hazards by blocking views at the intersections. There were trees at the end of their life, and trees bearing scars from excessive trimming by the local power company. And, truth be told, the whole thing looked a little (ok, maybe a lot) tired.

We realized that this park, and several other neighborhood green spaces, needed major improvements. Brookhaven is beautiful, but as we talked to neighbors at the annual meeting, at the street party, and just in passing, we all seem to agree that the public spaces have been neglected. The improvements planned for the Club/Davidson park are just the beginning.

We began the redesign process by looking at several similar sized parks in adjacent neighborhoods for ideas and inspiration. We then had the enormous good fortune of having acclaimed Atlanta landscape architect John Howard and his associates at Howard Design Studio generously offer to donate their time and expertise in creating a plan for our park. They are responsible for many of Brookhaven’s most beautiful residential landscapes and felt that this would be a great way to contribute to our community. The classical design can be appreciated by pedestrians as well as those driving by. It has an intimate quality for those who would like to gather or spend time there but is simple enough to be enjoyed from afar. Mr. Howards’s work has been featured in magazines including Veranda, Southern Accents, Traditional Home and many others. A wide selection of their projects can be viewed here.

This park will be developed in phases as we raise money to complete the project. Phase 1 will focus on improving visibility and safety, developing the corners with attractive new plantings, and removing some of the dying trees and replacing them with new ones. Phase 2 will include hardscape in the center and a gathering area with seating. Overall, we believe it's a fantastic plan that will be a centerpiece for the neighborhood. And, we see this as the first in our effort to improve the many green spaces in Brookhaven.

You can help by supporting this and future improvements to our neighborhood by making a tax deductible contribution to the Historic Brookhaven Preservation Society. You can also become involved by contacting the new Preservation Society. We believe these public spaces are part of what makes our neighborhood so beautiful but it's going to take the support of everyone in the neighborhood to address the needs of all our parks. If we all support this effort we believe we will enhance the beauty, the value, and the quality of life in our community.

Brookhaven Park

One of the least known but true gems of Brookhaven is Brookhaven Park, located at the intersection of Osborne and Peachtree Road behind the DeKalb Training Center. The 17-acre DeKalb County park includes a multi-use field, basketball court, playground, picnic shelter and walking trails.

A group of Brookhaven residents representing multiple Brookhaven neighborhoods have founded Friends of Brookhaven Park to redesign the park. “We hope to proceed in the raising of funds to hire a landscape architect to produce a master plan for the Park,’’ notes Jack Honderd, architect and Brookhaven resident, who serves as spokesman for the Friends.
